"Nobody is ever met at the airport when beginning a new adventure. It's just not done. " -- Elizabeth Warnock Fernea

179--South Africa: Road Trip to Cape Town
@ CherieSpotting     Jan 31 2004 - 16:00 PST
cherie writes: There is something about a road trip that always brings a smile to my face.
Now every year my friends and I have decided to explore a new country together. This year it was South Africa. Renee, Carter, Kristi and I came from Virginia Beach, Zurich, Washington DC and Los Angeles. We united in Johannesburg where we met a South African youth-hostel owner named Dom.

Dom was telling me about how he wanted to market the other hostels in South Africa when I had an idea.

“Would you consider driving us ladies around your country for a few weeks?” I asked Dom. “You can market all the hostels and we can see all the sights. If you drive, we can pay for all the gas.”

Dom was as excited about the idea as we were! We ended up having our own personal driver and tour guide! A few days later we stuffed our luggage into Dom’s Volksiebus and we were off on an African adventure.

Yes is such a powerful word. Dom’s “yes” bought him two weeks worth of free American advice (given in stereo from four ladies at the same time!) We used every ounce of that mini-bus time wisely discussing everything from love and sex to money and politics. How else could we solve all the world’s problems in less than two weeks?
