cherie writes: What is "playa-wear"? As far as fashion is concerned, anything, everything and nothing are all good choices in the Black Rock Desert. People never cease to surprise me at Burning Man. It's not what they wear that is shocking--it's how much they give.

You never know what the day will bring when you're in Black Rock City. Whether it is dancing at the Pink Mammoth, watching a trapeze show, enjoying the Pop Corn Palace, watching dogs play poker, or playing mini-golf with Tom Cruise...anything can happen.

Sometimes the day is just plain silly, like when you find yourself on a balance beam whacking your friend with a giant drum stick. Other times the day is serious, like when you stumble through the desert and find thousands of combat boots that represent soldiers that were recently killed.

One thing is certain—Black Rock City is full of life, love, acceptance, and wonder. And in the end, Burning Man is all about the people. (Greg says it is also about the laser beams.)

A typical afternoon desert bike ride goes something like this: I was riding my bike next to a giant birthday cake when a guy driving a shark asked me if I wanted a margarita. (Of course the shark-car was equipped with a blender…aren’t they all?) I declined the alcohol because I was about to climb a metal butterfly and then slide down a massive grass-slide.

“Did you see the dinosaur made of buckets?” the shark-car-operator asked before he drove into the dust. “Not yet, I think I’m going to stay here for a while and see if the rocket blasts off.” Only at Burning Man do rockets mix with butterflies while sharks and birthday cakes drive by dinosaurs.

cherie writes: Burning Man exists for one week in the vast white nothing-everything of the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. Participants (we call ourselves “Burners”) drag their mutant vehicles, crazy costumes and art projects from all over the globe so we can enjoy the beauty of a gift economy—the one place on earth where you can’t buy, sell or advertise anything (except ice & coffee.)

Burning Man annually renews my faith in humanity. For most of us, Burning Man is not just a “party in the desert”—it’s a place of radical self expression and extreme acceptance. It’s a dusty world where those of us who don’t fit in to normal “society” can find a home in a community that understands and celebrates the beauty of being different. cherie writes: How do you begin the day at Burning Man? You might try to fly with a pair of 30-ft steel wings or squash a car with the help of a giant hydraulic hand. Or before your playa journey, you may consider a quick Karma Muffin at McLightenment, especially since Ronald will be waiting for your order at the Drive-Thru.

At Burning Man 2008, we climbed inside a super-sized “Bummer”, an enlarged replica of the gas-guzzling Hummer. Later we rode on a Magic Carpet, grazed with sheep, climbed the ladders of “Elevation”, swung inside a replica of the Capitol building and narrowly escaped the jaws of a primordial fish. All this before breakfast!

It’s hard to sleep at Burning Man. If you close your eyes to rest, you might miss that UFO that just crashed!

cherie writes: You never know what you are going to find when you take a ride on the Burning Man playa. Rainbows and bone trees. Cheetos and cookie-dough. Hoola-hoops and stilts.

Depending on the day, your neighbors may be serving up snow cones, corn dogs or free spankings. But you can be sure at our Camp, we’ll always have plenty of cookies to give away! Here are a few photos from Burning Man 2007.

cherie writes: “Crude Awakening” was an incredible, unforgettable art installation at the 2007 Burning Man. Set in the stark Black Rock Desert, nine steel sculptures (weighing 7 tons each) sprawled around a 90-ft tall Oil Derrek in various poses of worship.

According to the artists, “the postures were chosen to represent religions from around the world, as each continent has in some way been impacted by the oil company, some through great luxury and excess, others through bloodshed and profound loss.”

The sculptures affected BurningMan participants in different ways. Some burners sprawled themselves on the ground and joined the steel art, mimicking their devout poses. Others sat in awe. Many snapped photos. A few shed real tears while the 30-ft tall statues joined them, crying tears of fiery propane.
