215--Virginia: The Hookah Hogs Reunite
@ CherieSpotting     May 23 2004 - 13:41 PST
cherie writes: Some say it started in India with coconut shells. Others say it began 500 years ago in Turkey. Where is started, no one knows. But one thing is for sure—it has recently hit the USA and Americans are in “Hookah heaven!”

The hookah is a funky-looking glass-pipe that filers flavored tobacco. It’s known by many names—the hookah, shisha, and its Arabic name “narghile.” Here, the colorful device is often referred to as: “the Hubbly Bubbly.”

We all know that smoking is bad for you—but don’t worry! We didn’t inhale! I’ve never smoked a cigarette in my life, but I have to admit that I’ve wrapped my lips around many a hookah.

Hookah tobacco is often mixed with honey or molasses and comes in fruity flavors like: apple, cherry and mango. (And fruit is healthy, right?)

A Hookah goes great with coffee and dessert. The hookah is known for gathering friends and families together and inspiring brilliant conversation. My college (UCLA) has hookah smoking coffee shops on the streets of Westwood. Hookah joints have sprung up in Miami, Chicago and even in a new restaurant in the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The hookah’s colored glass is often elaborately decorated with flowers and adorned in silver and gold. In the 19th century, it became fashionable for ladies to have their photos taken with a hookah. The tradition continues today.

My friends and I sat around on puffy pillows and dipped pitas into hummus, munched on feta and olives, and puffed on the magical hookah. Some might even say we became “hookah hogs.”

The hookah has a history of bringing couples together. (Okay--they've been together for 10 years without the help of a hookah.)
