"Heaven is where: the police are British, the cooks are Italian, the mechanics are German, the lovers are French, and it is all organized by the Swiss. Hell is where: the chefs are British, the mechanics are French, the lovers are Swiss, the police are German, and it is all organized by the Italians." -- T-shirt in Tortola, British Virgin Islands

cherie writes: They call her the fat virgin. Virgin Gorda, the 3rd largest British Virgin Island, is an 8-mile long slice of heaven. The more you explore Virgin Gorda, the more her beauty keeps unfolding. She’s like a decadent dessert with free refills.
There’s not a single traffic light on the island. Amongst Virgin Gorda’s pristine anchorages lies a unique group of rocks called The Baths. The history of The Baths is horrible, but its beauty is unmatched. African men and women were taken there for a final bath after their long voyage before they were sold into slavery. But the only misery that remains today is the wind crying through the rigging of the anchored yachts.
Joe, Dan, Milo, Patty and I spent the day at Virgin Gorda and then sailed back to Tortola. The views of Virgin Gorda are powerful enough to adjust the attitude of the island’s biggest grouch.
The beachside boulders are monstrous. How they got there, remains a mystery. The huge rocks form grottos and underground caves where the winner of a hide-and-go-seek game, may never be found. Translucent water forms brilliant pools and swirls in eddies amongst the striated rocks. Unmarked trails lead to secret beaches where time has erased all footprints.
