@ CherieSpotting
Dec 07 2003 - 18:49 PST |
Greg and his saucy senoritas. | Dona, Bernadette, Anne and Cherie. | The senoritas bring their chipolte-pork-tomatillo-chili (and cheesy-corn-bread) to the cook-off. |
The Cruising Kids Beany-Baby Chili Chow. | The Vallarta Yacht Club Bomberos. (I guess they needed a fire-department to put out their chili!) | Jamaica Mistaica! |
Minerva, from UK Sails. | Senor Greg and Senorita Bernadette. | Does that violate any child-labor-laws? Not if it's for charity! (Cory from Lemuria) |
Anne and Dona. | Anne was head of the Saucy Senoritas decorating committee. | Ronnie, the "Tea-Lady". |
Rambo serves the cold beer. | Jamaica Mistaica markets its chili with smooth tunes and dread locks. | Senor Greg. (Mustache applied by Anne.) |
The special-needs kids put on a show for the guests of the chili cook-off. | The cookie monster likes chili, too! | Dona, Greg and Bernadette. |
These little ladies know how to market chili. | First-place winner, Lupe Dipp of Moon and the Stars. | Senorita Cherie in a sombrero. |
Greg and two of his saucy senoritas. | Senor Greg. | What could be better? Cold beer for a buck, and it all goes to charity! |
Cherie and Bernadette. | The kids wait for the trophies to be handed out. | Moon and the Stars wins first-place. Lupe and her team are thrilled! |
Jamaica Mistaica wins 2nd place. | All the chili cook-off teams get a nice certificate. | cherie writes: The location was Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. A group of local restaurants and cruisers joined forces to raise money for local special needs children.
The day was a burning success (with both warm weather and hot chili.) 19 volunteer groups offered samples of their chili for 50 cents each. Even the kids got into the act. The cruising kids off of various boats got together and made their own chili called the: Cruising Kids Beany-Baby Chili Chow. There were lines of folks waiting to sample the young sailor's chili. B
But sadly the kids did not take first-place. (They should have won first-place for marketing, since the kids made up songs and took turns being walking-billboards advertising their delicious creation.
The first place trophy went to Moon and the Stars while Jamacia Mistaica won second place! (Jamacia Mistaica also won the largest trophy for best-table decoration!)
A few of the special needs children put on a costumed dance-show to thank the cruisers and local restaurants for helping them raise money. The children that danced were deaf, and they had white cards placed on the stage (so they would know where to put their feet.) I only wished they could have heard the applause!
Cassiopeia joined forces with Zykanthos and Free Flight to become "Greg's Saucy Senoritas." We offered a 5-gallon pot of our chipolte-pork-tomatillo chili. Even though we gave out the chili in one-ounce cups, we were out of chili hour later. (I'm not sure if it was poor-planning, or great chili!) Next year, we'll have to remember to make more!
The event was huge success that was sponsored by Vallarta Yacht Club, Paradise Villiage, Coca-Cola and Corona.
