152--California: Long Beach Triathlon @ Site News     Sep 21 2003 - 08:36 PST cherie writes: Greg did his first triathlon! The location was Long Beach, CA on September 21st. Eight of my friends (plus a thousand other people) did the .5 mile swim, 12 mile bike, and 3 mile run! The youngest person to complete the race was 13 and the oldest was 74. The fastest time was Mark Lees who came in just under one hour (59:46). Here are the times and places for my friends in the 30-34 male age group: Dave 4th place 1:08 Justin 5th place 1:09 Kevin 10th place 1:12 Chris 22nd place 1:16 (he even had to fix a flat tire!) Mark 26th place 1:17 Greg came in 41st in his age group of 25-29 years old males with a time of 1:32, not bad for only training 9 days before the race. Lauren got 4th place in the 14-15 year old girls with a time of 2:00 Audrey got 6th place in the 14-15 year olf girls with a time of 2:09 I just cheered and was grateful that I didn't have to jump in that 63 degree water. Each runner is marked with their age on the back of their calves. Wake up is at 4:30 am, before the sun rises! Kevin gets ready for the early half mile swim! It's still dark as the swimmers struggle into their wet-suits. Justin, who ended up getting 5th place, can't wait to get wet! Mark applies Glide (sort-of-like-deodorant) to prevent a wet-suit rash. Greg, Chris, Kevin, Justin and Mark. Lauren completes her first triathlon at 15 years old and get's 4th place. Audrey gets 6th place! The ladies get their bikes ready! The swimmers walk to the starting point on the beach. Chris, Kevin and Justin test out the water. Greg stretches as the sun rises. Different colored caps let everyone know what age-group you are in. Dave and Mark. Justin's feeling good. Greg, Chris, Justin and Kevin. (Greg's cap is blue because he is under 30 years old. Chris shows us his muscle! The ladies get the pink caps! Chris is ready to go! Last smile before the tri begins. Who's ready to get wet? The ocean becomes a sea of red (bathing caps.) Dave is one of the first swimmers out of the water! Mark comes out next with the rest of the guys right behind him. Mark gets ready to jump on his bike. Lauren looks like she's walking on water! Lauren, a little closer. Look at all those guys Audrey is ahead of! Dave races by on the bike. Kevin screams past, my camera can barely catch him. Greg on the bike with his Laker's shirt! No training, none of the "right" equipment, and Greg still does great! Dave on his way to 4th place! Mark waves to his fans. Kevin runs by. Mark is sweating just a bit. Julie Swail is the first female to cross the line. Dave has a brilliant finish! Justin comes in 5th, right after Dave! This guy edges in front of Kevin in the last few seconds. Still Kevin shaved 4 minutes off his time last year and came in 10th place! Chris gets a flat tire, and still comes in 22nd. Greg grabs a quick drink as the race continues. Ouch! A cramp! Greg streaks past!
