130--California: Tiki Prom 2003
@ CherieSpotting     Jun 01 2003 - 12:15 PST
cherie writes: Prom Night. Fourteen years after our original prom, we relived it again! A group of neighbors in San Digeo got together to host the very first Tiki Prom. Smoke floated through the air as tiki torches brought a soft light to the magical evening. They went all out with food, a bar, and even a DJ.

Just like our real prom (in May 1989) Jean, Chris and I, all got "ready" together. But this time instead of searching for "the perfect dress" at South Coast Plaza, we picked our gowns and accessories from the racks of local thrift shopes.

This year turned out to be quite a bit less expensive:
Jean: pink fluffy skirt $25, plastic leaves 14, tiki necklace $2--total: $41
Chris: green dress $10, gold pumps $10, lace socks (free...in the try-on bin!) total: $20
Cherie: Blue velvet dress $4, matching purse $1, fur-lined tiara $1, white gloves $10--Total: $16

Jean, Chris and I got all "dolled up" between sips of beer and bites of pizza. When we arrived we were ready to spike the punch and party! About sixty people showed up dressed in everything from plastic leis to tuxedoes.

I was determined to win "Prom Queen" but I thought I might get ousted by a dog in a white dress. Luckily the dog came in second and I took the crown! (My dream come true!!) Patrick, one of the party's hosts, took home the honor of Prom King although he could barely slip the crown over his bushy hair.

All good things must come to an end, and "America's finest" (ie. the police) showed up to quiet down the guests and bring back peace to a once tranquil neighborhood. The officer checked out the party, and we checked out the officer. Jean and I decided he was "kinds cute" so we asked him to "frisk" us and then cuff us. Luckily we avoided a night in jail, but this Tiki Prom will forever be a night to remember.
