126--Puerto Rico: For the Birds @ CherieSpotting     Apr 01 2003 - 11:30 PST Cherie writes: Attack of the birds. Who knew that a friendly pigeon feeding could turn into an attack! Birds were pecking and scratching and scraping the bare skin off my Dad's sunburned back. My Dad? That's right! My dad (Stan) and step-mom Joanne flew in to Puerto Rico to visit us! We've taken them to the local market (where they bought exactly one mango), the rainforest (where they sampled the nectar of the coconut straight from the source) and to the birthplace of the Pina Colada where we sucked down the slushy beverage like we'd never tasted it before. The Pina Colada is 40 years old this year and we went to the restaurant that concocted the first frothy drink! Later my dad made friends with a local police officer who let us sit on his motorcycle and even shoot his gun! (Okay, he didn't actually let us handle his gun...but he did let us play on his bike!) After all these years, Dad finally learns how to peel an orange properly! The vegetable guy at the local market. You can tell he's having a great day by his vibrant expression. Dad examines the bananas and finds them a little too green. Hot peppers! Stan treats Joanne like a Queen fanning her in the tropical weather with a fallen leaf. A moorish tower exactly where you'd epect to find it, in the jungle tropics! Can you be a nature lover and a bug hater at the same time? Wild berries for lunch? Climbing their way to the top. We went to the National Park to get away from it all. Looks like everyone else had the same idea! The stream is so pure you can drink from it! (If you want to crap for a week straight.) True love is sharing a coconut. Cherie tells her dad that she doesn't want to eat the coconut jelly because it looks like snot. Everything grows to obsene sizes in the rainforest--especially snails, snakes and spiders. Greg and Cherie.
