Cherie and Kristi in the quaint town (Soelden) getting ready to hop on the gondola for another incredible day of skiing and snowboarding. You don't need to drive anywhere in this town! A view of Soelden from the gondola. Excuse me, did we just ski by an ice-elephant? Every year the town does a reinactment of Hannibal coming over the Alps...instead of real elephants, they have ice-elephants. Being borm and raised in California, I had never really celebrated "Christmas" in the snow. Kristi and I in our Santa hats. You could say skiing in Soelden is like being on "cloud 9". Probably because most of the time you are above the clouds. Britta, Kristi and Cherie After a long day of skiing everyone heads to apre-ski....which bascially means they start drinking at 3 o'clock. The popular drink is called "Glue-wine". It tastes more like glue, than wine. (PS-they don't spell it that way.) In three years of traveling together this was the first and only care package that we ever got. I will never forget it. It was sent to us by Don Halliwill, and his thoughtfullness has never been forgotten. There is no "taste" like home. This is what Soelden looks like after a snowfall. I took this picture from our balcony in "Pension Wildspitze", the place we always call "home" in Soelden. The scenery in Soelden simply takes your breath away (often because you can't breath because you are up so damn high!!) "Solomon Station" is our favorite place to stop and have an espresso while on the slopes. Before you may have skiied past the ice-elephant (simply because it was carved into a glacier) As we skiied farther down the mountain, it was hard to miss this ice-elephant! Another view of the Austrian Alps. Click on each picture to see it full size.
