Cherie ice-climbing on the Franz Josef Glacier. One of the fastest flowing and steepest glaciers in the world, Franz Joseph moves 10 times faster than other valley glaciers.

cherie writes: Franz Joseph Glacier surges down the narrow valley gap oozing forward at an astonishing rate of 2.5 meters a day. One of the fastest flowing and steepest glaciers in the world, Franz Joseph’s solid river of ice pours dramatically into a rainforest only 240 meters above sea-level. The glaciers flow-rate began exceeding the melt-rate in 2005, and the most recent advance of the glacier has attracted ice-climbers from all corners of the globe.

Colin, Dan, Sarah, and I took a guided day tour of the glacier. The labyrinth of absurd ice formations was mesmerizing. Glaciers, like English muffins, have lots of nooks and crannies. Find out more by clicking on Franz Josef Glacier Guides

299--Thailand: Rock Climbing on Railey Beach

I'm half-way through my climb and still smiling! Remarkably, I made it to the top!

Instead of facing our fear—we climbed it. Hilda, Diane, Leighton and I took a longtail boat from Krabi to Railey Beach near Ao Nang, Thailand. Railey Beach (also spelled Railay) draws rock-climbers from all over the world. Craggy limestone cliffs jut out of the water dare you to climb to the top.

Hilda, who fell off a 28-ft cliff a few years ago, faced her fear of heights and climbed to the top like there was no going back. As the saying goes, a person needs to have great depth to reach a great height.

260--Thailand: Trekking in the Hill-Tribes

cherie writes: Diane, Hilda and I were ready for our 3-day trek amongst the hill-tribes of Northern Thailand. Our new friend Hannah got all dolled up for the trek. She’s the type of gal who considers her make-up a necessity—but will never actually call it make-up. During the day Hannah’s lip-stick is “SPF 15”, while at night, the very same lip color is “moisturizer.”

Note: as I make fun of Hannah’s propensity to apply cosmetics, she is also the type of lady who trekked her own pack on her back for 3-days (while I hired a porter to carry my things for $5 a day.) Note: Diane also packed her things the entire trek!

cherie writes: America's Cup boats are not just for the sailing elite anymore. Next Level Sailing, in San Diego, owns two America Cup boats. For $99 you can go out for an afternoon daysail on Stars and Stripes.

The 80-foot yacht effortlessly glided along at 12 knots zigzagging through San Diego Bay--dodging the warships. Sherry and I got on the grinder and helped raise 4000-square-feet of sail. Watching the main raise 116 feet into the air took my breath away. The next thing we knew--Sherry and I were driving! Good thing there were two wheels so we didn't have to fight!

168--California: The Ice-Ladies Cometh

cherie writes: I’m convinced that whoever made up the sport of ice-skating was a certifiable nut. What was the psycho thinking? Let’s put sharp blades on people’s shoes and let them slip around on a slab of ice. It’s probably the same person who invented darts. Is it really a good idea to give a sloppy drunk a baby-ice-pick (with feathers on the back) and let him throw it around the bar? “Try to avoid the other drunks, please!”

Anyway, this lunatic who invented ice-skating did something even crazier! He (or she?) decided that the best place to put this chunk of frozen water is on the beach. That’s right. Now “Surf City” AKA Huntington Beach, has its own outdoor ice-skating rink. (It’s Southern California’s way of letting its residents know it is winter.)

This is a very difficult trick called "standing mast with falling girl". Incredibly, I mastered this trick in less than an hour.

Turks and Caicos are a group of 48 Caribbean Islands owned by the British. (Anytime I say “owned by the British,” you can assume that means it is very expensive. But I guess that’s the price we have to pay to listen to people with cool accents.)

Provo is the most popular island because of its gorgeous beaches. Everything in Provo has an ocean front view--from the bars and restaurants to the playgrounds and cemeteries. If you don’t like beaches-- you can enjoy yourself by visiting the world’s only Conch Farm located in Provo. I now know more than any human should know about sea-snails.
